PT Pertamina (Persero) explores cooperation with energy companies from the United States, ExxonMobil, for the development of carbon capture and carbon capture storage (CCS) in Indonesia. Pertamina and ExxonMobil are planned to develop CCS in the Java Sea which has a capacity of 3 Giga Ton CO2 with an investment value of more than US $ 2 billion or around IDR 31.4 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 15,713 per US $).
To realize the plan, Pertamina and ExxonMobil signed the principal amendments as a continuation of the agreement that had been produced at the November 2022 G20 event. This signing was carried out by Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati, President Director of Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) Wiko Migantoro and President of Low Carbon Solutions, ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. Irtiza Sayyed, on Monday, November 13, 2023, in Washington DC, USA.
In this agreement Pertamina and ExxonMobil agreed to continue their cooperation to evaluate the CCS Hub in the northwestern part of Java, precisely in the Asri Basin and the Sunda Basin. CCS Hub at this location is expected to offer geological storage in significant volumes, which can capture and inject CO2 from the domestic and regional industry. The event was also witnessed by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment in Ad-Interim Erick Thohir, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif, and the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia Ad-Interim, Erick Thohir said “The agreement signed today indicates an important step in Indonesia’s journey as a leader in reducing emissions. The latest technology behind the CCS Hub will not only reduce emissions and encourage the low carbon industry but also creates jobs and attract investment. “
Deputy for Maritime and Energy Sovereignty Coordination, Jodi Mahardi, after the signing of the MoU, said that “the signed document is an important part of the long process that has been carried out by the Indonesian government to build the CCS ecosystem. With this agreement, it proves that all devices in Indonesia, Especially in terms of the government, it is ready to utilize the potential of CCS Indonesia for the progress of the low -carbon industry, increased investment, and opening new jobs for the people of Indonesia “.
Senior Vice President of ExxonMobil Corporation Jack P. Williams said, “We are proud to be able to collaborate with Pertamina and the Indonesian government in these transformative projects. Together, we have the opportunity to reduce emissions and encourage economic growth in Indonesia and the whole region.”
Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati explained that Pertamina continued to develop the decarbonization program, one of which was by developing the CCS Hub which would be built with cooperation with strategic partners such as ExxonMobil. According to Nicke, this project has the opportunity to store CO2 in a strategic area, with the development of CCS Hub in the Java region which is very close to the location of various industries. This CCS Hub will provide access to geological storage in saline aquifer (saline aquifer), which can accommodate at least 3 giga tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the domestic and regional carbon dense industries.
Pertamina as a leader company in the field of energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuing to encourage programs that have a direct impact on the achievements of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). All of these efforts are in line with the application of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) throughout Pertamina’s business line and operations.
