Indonesia Will Have the First Titanium Smelter, the Investment Value is IDR 1.3 Trillion

The Ministry of Industry supports efforts to develop the Titanium smelter industry because it is in line with the downstream policy. In addition, Indonesia also has abundant mineral reserves.
“The government is actively spurring the downstreaming of the industry in order to increase the added value of mineral raw materials in the country,” Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said in his statement on Friday (12/08/2023).
Agus gave an appreciation to PT Sahaja thanks to Sahabat Jaya who had realized its investment for the development of the Ilmenite processing or purification industry into a Titanium Slag product.
This titanium smelter was built in Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands with an investment of IDR 1.3 trillion, with a capacity of 100 metric tons of production per day and will play a role in meeting the needs of titanium in the country and global.
“We expect this smelter to be a step forward in improving the industrial sector and state independence in producing titanium. Therefore, support for PT Sahaja can participate in advancing the regions and also Indonesia,” said President Director of PT Kelaja Thanks to Sahabat Jaya, Arbi Leo.
This became the first titanium smelter in Indonesia, and currently the progress of its development has reached 75 percent. With the construction of the smelter, Indonesia can increase added value in this industry, reduce dependence on imports and increase added value in the industrial supply chain.
The ilmenite is one source of titanium (IT) elements needed to make a variety of high-performance alloys. Ilmenite is formed as the main mineral in vaginal igneous rocks, concentrated in a layer and is found as waste from tin mining or zirconium sand mining.
The Minister of Industry said, most ilmenite mined throughout the world were used to produce titanium dioxide (TI02), pigments, white lime, and abrasive polishing.
“The existence of a titanium smelter with ilmenite raw materials will certainly be able to increase the added value of mineral ore and create jobs in the downstream industry sector, especially in the industrial sector that utilizes titanium such as the health equipment industry, aircraft, spacecraft, and equipment Military, “he explained.
There are five reasons that make the Minister of Industry proud to attend the inauguration of the launch of this Titanium smelter. First, is the first titanium smelter in Indonesia. Second, the establishment of the smelter of PT. Unpretentious thanks to friends Jaya initiated by young people. Third, this smelter investment is 100% domestic investment. Fourth, there are development plans to downstreaming other derivative products.
“Finally, the company is led by Indonesian,” he explained.
