Indonesian herbal medicine (Jamu) officially listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Indonesia recorded total 13 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
“I would like to thank UNESCO for establishing herbal medicine as intangible cultural heritage. This determination will strengthen Indonesia’s efforts to protect and develop herbal medicine as a cultural heritage, as well as contributing to global health and welfare,” said Minister of Education and Culture Nadiem Anwar Makarim conveyed online in the forum The 18th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Kasane, Republic of Botswana was made in the release of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Wednesday (6/12/2023).
Budaya Sehat Jamu (Jamu Wellness Culture) into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity UNESCO was conducted in the UNESCO forum today at 04.30 PM. Jamu Wellness Culture to become an 13th UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage from Indonesia which is encrypted into the UNESCO list.
“As one of our cultural heritages, Jamu represents a deep, meaningful, and harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Jamu has become an inseparable part of the lives of Indonesian people for centuries,” Nadiem added.
Minister Nadiem expressed his highest appreciation of the efforts to preserve Jamu as a culture for health carried out by various parties for a long time. Thank you for all Indonesian people who formed the Jamu as cultural ecosystem.
“Thank you to all supporters of the healthy culture of Jamu both domestically and abroad, producers, the presence and mixers, sellers, researchers, communities, entrepreneurs, and connoisseurs of the efficacy of herbs who have jointly revived the Jamu cultural ecosystem as it is today, “He said.
The Director General of Culture added, Hilmar Farid, that Jamu is an herb of traditional Indonesian traditional medicine made from natural ingredients for prevention, treatment, recovery, and maintenance of health and beauty. Jamu is one of the heritages of science from the ancestors of the Indonesian people who have been mentioned in reliefs, primbon, inscriptions, and old books of the archipelago.
“We have experienced a moment when life is like at the lowest point when Pandemi struck. But apparently, this cultural product called Jamu is one of the recipes that heal, strengthen, and unite us,” Hilmar explained.
The preservation of Jamu, he continued, requires optimization of joint and community involvement in participatory collective management. During this time Jamu has become an ecological encyclopaedia, knowledge of health technology, and markers of civilization, as well as local knowledge and local wisdom from a very valuable archipelago culture.
In addition to being a cultural and natural wealth of Indonesia, Jamu also has a strategic value from the economic side. Jamu production involves many people from various levels of society, such as farmers who plant raw materials for herbal medicine, workers who process them, to sales and marketing staff. Jamu is also a local economic driver and several herbal products have gained popularity in the global market.
Thus there are 13 Indonesian cultural heritage in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list as follows: 1. Wayang (2008); 2. Keris (2008); 3. Batik (2009); 4. Batik Education and Training (2009); 5. Angklung (2010); 6. Saman Dance (2011); 7. Noken (2012); 8. Three Genre of Bali Dance (2015); 9. Pinisi Ship (2017); 10. Pencak Silat Tradition (2019); 11. Pantun (2020); 12. Gamelan (2021); 13. Jamu (2023).
